The subtitle of this blog could be, “In Which David Experiences For the First Time What Everyone Else Knew About Twenty-Five Years Ago.”
Just watched Tombstone. Amazing. Especially Kurt Russell’s mustache, which, if I’m not mistaken, got top billing.

TOMBSTONE, starring Kurt Russell’s Mustache. Now that’s some good marketing.

In the past hour, I have been elated, miserable, warm-hearted, heartbroken, exultant, and dejected (my current state, but give me ten more pages).
This dude knew a thing or two about writing.

I have a chalkboard wall on which I write myself little notes to remember how to do good design. Betcha can’t guess what I’m focusing on right now.

Because I can casually say that something is advocating a “postmodern gnosticism” to him, and he’ll know what I mean without stopping to blink.
He’s one cool dude.

Here’s what I like about waking up in the city: in the morning, with the sun coming through the window, traffic on the main road outside sounds like waves crashing, and the occasional horn is like a bird call.
(Truthful observation courtesy of Casey, of Urban, Ever After. Lame phrasing mine.)

New rule for myself: Sketch more, “Design” less. And by “Design,” I mean pulling up Photoshop and saying, “Okay… it should be … ehhhhh … blue. This blue? That blue? Hmmm…”
Of course, any good designer will tell you that’s not design. And it definitely shouldn’t be the first thing I do. But it was, and I was an unhappy dude who REALLY wanted to be spending more time with a #2 pencil and some thick sketching paper. Then, fed up with the process, I threw down a sketch for a web page I’m creating on paper, and I realized that I was able to do the work faster and enjoy it more in a sketchbook.
I then translated it to the screen, and although it wasn’t flawless, those decisions about blue actually came at the right time, instead of being dream-killing life-draining horrors.
So. My new discovery: if you want to spend less time staring at the screen and more time with a pencil in hand, you should go for it. It will actually benefit the business, your sanity, and Dixon, manufacturers of the finest #2 pencils in the world. (Although, believe it or not, Staples makes a surprisingly fine #2 as well.)

If you’re one of those people who got off the David Crowder Band train when A Collision wasn’t Illuminate II, get back on. Church Music is one of the best albums I have heard in a long, long time.
(As usual, this is old news, but hey; I didn’t have my blog when this album broke.)
