Remember our little Should I game on this blog? Same idea here, just smaller in scope. Post a wish for our little friend, and tomorrow I’ll pick the best one and we’ll go from there.

(The purpose of this exercise is for our general amusement, as well as helping me learn a thing or two about drawing & posting online.)

I can’t & don’t endorse all their work, but these three are the ones I’m looking at as I seek to learn how to draw simple, iconic, Western characters.

Gnosis of Noses and Eyebrows

The above images are the reasons I love Jared Chapman’s work. He helped me break through a wall of uniform facial features, and showed me the variety of constructions that can be used to create a varied, lively, American illustrative world. Thanks, Jared!

(Note: best of all is bottom, center — wide-set round eyes with worry lines, simple/imperfect nose, “thick” ears … I think I need to send Jared a fruit basket or something.)

Jared Chapman

Caught a major break today with the discovery of Jared Chapman (thanks, Drawn!). He’s part Scott C., part Kate Beaton, part Emily Carrol, and very much win.

(Those three are a breed of American* illustrators/comics artists whose work I really respond to as non-Manga, non-Herge, authentic, emotional, graphic, and clear.)

*Canada is in North America, kids.

I have no idea who Jodabar is, or this dude, or what his deal is. But I do know that he doesn’t seem to be the happiest or most ethical of campers.
