Objects Reading Books, by Marc Johns

There’s something kind of miraculous about this series of prints by Marc Johns, featuring household objects reading books. Marc says:

There’s something very personal about books, so to have inanimate objects reading specific titles seemed like a pretty amusing idea worth exploring.

I think these are gentle and even tender, in an offbeat way.

No, not really. But this is the next best thing. StumbleUpon (which I am in danger of getting very addicted to very quickly) led me to a site by the Vatican, which puts you down in the middle of the Sistine Chapel, and lets you look around. No commentary besides a soft choir singing is given or necessary. Take a look, and let it take your breath away.

(PS — if the link doesn’t take you directly there, but drops you on the Vatican landing page, pick English > Basilicas and Papal Chapels > Sistine Chapel. Trust me, it’s worth the small effort required.)

Paintings of people looking at paintings by Pablo Guzman

I’m a happily postmodern kid, so I like self-reference (to a certain point). To that end, this series titled Homenaje al cuadro by Pablo Guzman suits me just fine. I love that feeling as you go back and forth between the levels of the painting — trying to see what they’re seeing, then realizing that they themselves are what you should be looking at, then realizing the painting as a whole is a beautiful composition, to the point where it becomes almost abstract, then getting caught up again in, “But what are they looking at?” and starting the whole process over again.

If anyone knows any other good “paintings of paintings” (besides this one) I’d love to hear about ‘em.

Talk about a beautifully composed shot from Casablanca. This could be a painting.

Man, I love me some Futurism. Check this action out… I’ve loved it since college: I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold, by Charles Demuth (his Aucassin and Nicolette is also very good). Next time I’m at the Met, this is definitely on my to-see list.
