First trailer for Les Miserables

May 31st, 2012 | Filed under: Film and Video | 4 Comments »

Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, via Boublil and Schönberg. With Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway as Valjean, Javert, and Fantine, respectively.

The songs were sung live on-set. That means there will be no terribly-dubbed-yes-I’m-looking-at-you-Phantom-voiceovers.

In case the first cast listing wasn’t enough for you, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter are the ThĂ©nardiers. And yes, you’re supposed to hate them. I also should mention that Tom Hooper, director of The King’s Speech, is at the helm, with the same cinematographer and production designer. I’ve been tracking this movie since before there were rumors about it. Seriously.

Ask me if I’m excited for this. Go on, ask me.

Answer: yes. Yes I am. This Christmas can’t come soon enough.

YES! A Les Miserables that I can take my American friends to! Since it stopped playing New York, you either have to catch it while on tour, or go to London. (Where I just saw it a few weeks ago, with my sister. Which made me happy.)

Russel Crowe as Javiert is a great choice from my current vantage point.

Anyway, GUSH GUSH GUSH GUSH GUSH! This and the Hobbit! Can I take a time machine to Christmas, please?

Brandon, I said the same thing about a time machine. I’m already aggressively bidding on a DeLorean on eBay … now I just need a flux capacitor and some Libyan contacts. Or a really good bit of weather-predicting software.

I think the casting is dead-on throughout. I can’t wait to see Helena Bonham Carter as the Mme. She’s gonna bring something special to the part. And I think Cohen will work in the same it’s-okay-to-hate-him way that Jim Carrey did in Series of Unfortunate Events.

Anne Hathaway was a question mark, but it’s her year, between this and The Dark Knight Rises. I’m really hoping she surprises some people, including me, in both movies. What I’ve seen so far here is promising.

And you can’t beat Tom Hooper & Co for this project. Everything about this screams awesomeness.

Not that I’m looking forward to it or anything.

You left out Colm Wilkinson (the dude who played Valjean in the 10th anniversary Les Mis) as the Bishop in the cast listing.

Right! And Colm Wilkinson! How could I have left him off?
