AFAC Hunger Action Month design work

September 4th, 2012 | Filed under: Illustration, Portfolio, Web Design | 2 Comments »

It’s Hunger Action Month here in the DC area, and I’m happy to be able to use my design skills to help raise awareness of those without food in our community. The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) does great work for those in need, and I was honored to work with them on design and illustration for a web “game” exploring what it’s like to try and find food on the limited resources that are a reality for many of our neighbors every week.

Take a minute to check out my design and illustration … and also get your head around hunger! Life’s too short not to care about this stuff.

Hunger is a problem we can help solve- even if a little at a time. Christine and I volunteered when Extreme Makeover Home Edition came to our town to build a new soup kitchen for a ministry that had stretched its resources to the breaking point. We also shop at BJ’s for food to contribute toward keeping them going.

Scott, that’s awesome. I admit that I had never thought seriously about hunger until I read Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.” That’s when I realized what a tangible problem it was, and how easy for those with resources to solve. We were encouraged to call around to our local grocery stores and discover that many of them were already donating day-old baked goods and produce to an area food shelter, but we still contribute where we can with my design skills or my wife’s donations of time to pick up donated food and bring it to the shelter.

I’m glad that EMHE was able to bring attention to your soup kitchen! Helping them out must have been a fun experience for both of you! Did Ty Pennington personally scream in your face with a bullhorn? If not, you may want to ask for your money back. :)
