Cursive will be the new Helvetica

Ready for a prediction? In coming years, script faces will be as ubiquitous and beloved as good ol’ Helvetica was in the 80’s. I’m not sure when this trend will erupt as a full-scale volcano, but watch for the 2016 Rio Olympic games to be a part of the equation. They’ve created a custom typeface that you’ll be seeing a lot of in four years. After London 2012’s work as what some have called the worst font in the world (I disagree) and the brutish unsophistication of the 2014 Sochi.ru type, Rio’s script will drift in like a breath of warm, inviting air, and copycats everywhere will want to get their hands on a beautiful ribbony font of their own.

That’s assuming it’s not already a mega-trend by that time. I still think that if someone would just hurry up and build Helvetica Script, we’d be seeing plenty of connected letters well before 2016.
