From a short story on Jonah

Allow me to get a little Dostoevsky on you for a minute:

The men, Jonah saw, were trapped too … unthinking, unable to understand, or ask, “Why do we kill each other? Why do we steal women from their villages? Why do we hate? Why do we not love? Why do we not use our strength to protect the weak? Why do we not teach our children about beauty? Why do we not embrace one another, and call every man our brother? Why are we not just, kind, virtuous, wise? Why are we not the kings of the earth, with crowns of stars and hearts of wisdom, leading men into the light of goodness and life? Why?”

“Why are we not the kings of the earth?”
